Long description

Eras de la Sal Historic Monumental Complex is one of the most representative sites of Torrevieja’s identity and a direct testament to its salt-making tradition. Built in the last third of the 18th century, it operated for over a century and a half as a system for collecting, storing and shipping salt from the lagoons, remaining in use until 1958.

It was here that the barges carrying the salt to the ships anchored in the bay were loaded. Inside, the reconstruction of the wooden ‘caballete’ stands out; this is the original structure through which the salt was loaded using a gravity-fed system via hoppers.

Traditionally, the Eras de la Sal has been the venue for the International Habaneras and Polyphony Festival, declared of International Tourist Interest, becoming an iconic venue for choral music and one of the city’s great cultural symbols.
