Long description

La Mata Tower is one of the most notable heritage sites on the Torrevieja coastline.

Situated by the sea, it formed part of the coastal surveillance and defence system, whilst also serving a monitoring role linked to the protection of the salt flats and the old jetty used for  loading salt and other goods.

Circular in plan and built of masonry, it follows the model of defensive towers erected between the 15th and 16th centuries to warn of possible incursions by sea. Over time, it has been subject to various restoration works that have enabled its preservation as a historical testament to the area’s maritime and salt-producing past.

Next to the tower is the Plaza del Embarcadero, an open space on the promenade from which one can still see the remains of the old quay
