Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja Natural Park
A 3.700-hectare protected area whose environmental values have been…
Las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja Natural Park (Parque Natural) ranks among the municipality's principal protected areas, comprising two salt lagoons of significant ecological value: the Laguna de Torrevieja, known as the Pink Lagoon, and the Laguna de La Mata. Together, they constitute an internationally renowned wetland and one of the area's most distinctive landscapes.
The Pink Lagoon is distinguished by its striking colour, caused by high salinity levels and microorganisms living in the water. Because of its protected status, access is only possible via the tourist train, which enables visitors to explore the surroundings and discover the salt-making tradition associated with this unique landscape. The Laguna de La Mata, by contrast, features waymarked trails and viewpoints allowing visitors to observe its rich biodiversity, notably flamingos, avocets and black-winged stilts. Guided eco-tours run regularly in this area, offering an interpretative exploration of the park and its natural heritage. For further information and bookings: www.turismodetorrevieja.com/ecorutas
